dark side of the moon

The moon orbits the Earth once every 27.322 days. It also takes approximately 27 days for the moon to rotate once on its axis. As a result, the moon does not seem to be spinning but appears to observers from Earth to be keeping almost perfectly still. Scientists call this synchronous rotation.

CPT and SARS

With chest physical therapy, the person gets in different positions to use gravity to drain mucus (postural drainage) from the five lobes of the lungs. Each position is designed so that a major part of the lung is facing downward. When combined with percussion, it may be known as postural drainage and percussion. This is where a caregiver or partner can clap and or vibrate the person’s chest to further dislodge and move the mucus to the larger airways where it can be coughed or huffed (氣喘吁吁) out of the body.

Scrupulous (一絲不苟的) precautions should be taken during procedures like nebulisation (really practising for SARS patients?), bronchoscopy, chest physiotherapy and gastroscopy. Standard precautions like hand washing and eye protection should be made mandatory for all care takers. Contact precautions like use of gloves, gowns and masks should be enforced for all people coming in contact with the patient or his surroundings. N-95 respirators are recommended.

Evaluation toward lecturer

Man Mo Temple

The earliest of these voluntary organizations (established by local Chinese elites) was the Man Mo Temple, founded in 1847 by Loo Aqui (盧阿桂) and Tam Achoy (譚三才). Although its ostensible (外表的) purpose was to worship the gods of literature and war and to observe religious festivals, the temple served other important functions. It soon became the main social center for Hong Kong's Chinese population, regardless of their regional or occupational affiliations (聯繫). The temple also evolved into the self-managed, informal government of the Chinese community, with the merchants electing a committee to deliberate (仔細討論) disputes. Thus, between the Man Mo Temple and the smaller neighborhood committees, the Chinese community soon developed mechanisms for managing its own affairs. Although the European community often eyed the temple suspiciously for clandestinely (祕密地) controlling "native affairs," the colonial government was happy with the arrangement since it fit with the government's policy of ruling the Chinese on the cheap.

How China's skilled Chaozhou woodcarvers created an enviable (令人羨慕的) art form that still thrives today

Chaozhou woodcarving is one of the oldest surviving and most reputable form of woodcarving in China, and is famous for its precision, sophistication and lifelike sculptures (雕刻).

Depicting (描繪) everything from golden phoenixes [ˋfi:niks] and blossoming flowers to crabs struggling in a fishing net and rivals (競爭對手) fighting in a martial arts contest, the craft captures the fine, complex details of images and moments in time.

It brings them to life, right down to facial expressions and dynamic movements.

Chaozhou woodcarvings can often be found on the doors, windows and beams (  樑) of temples and ancestral halls, on furniture such as partitions and cabinets, on ornaments and on religious tools and vessels (容器).

In 2006, Chaozhou woodcarving was placed on the first national list of intangible (非物質) culture heritage.

Chaozhou woodcarving dates back to the Tang dynasty (616-907 A.D.)

By the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.), the Chaozhou people had already mastered the skills and techniques involved, says Anven Wu Yim-chung, an executive director of the Federation of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community Organization.

Chaozhou woodcarving continued to develop, reaching its peak in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911 A.D.).

"In the early years of the dynasty, a Ming loyalist called Zheng Chengong tried to topple the regime," Wu says.

"When he was in Taiwan, the Qing court imposed a sea embargo (貿易禁令) to prevent anyone, such as the fishermen, from helping him."

The Qing government eventually defeated Zheng and sea travel resumed, but by then suffering was already endemic (地方性的) among the Chaozhou people.

"Some ate tree bark to survive," Wu says.

"As a result, some Chaozhou people moved to Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore."

While many migrants struggled to survive, some managed to get by, eventually building on their wealth.

From the middle to late Qing dynasty, those who did well began sending money back to those family and friends who had remained in China.

Much of this money went towards building ceremonial buildings in China, all of them embellished (裝飾) with exquisite (精湛的) details and intricate (錯綜複雜的) patterns carved out of wood.

"As soon as you enter a temple or an ancestral [ænˋsestrəl] hall in Chaozhou, you will see wooden crossbeams on both sides of the ceiling decorated with elaborate carvings," Wu says.

While Ming dynasty craftsmen would leave the natural colour of the wood intact after carving, from the Qing dynasty onward they began coating the carving in colours such as gold, red, blue-green, black and white.

Carol Lau, assistant curator (館長) of urban and oral history, at the Hong Kong Museum of History, which is now staging an exhibition, "Gilded (鍍金) Glory: Chaozhou Woodcarving", says the woodcarvings are also known as "gilt (金色塗層) wood" because of the way in which lacquer and gold foil are often applied to pieces to give them a resplendent (華麗的) gold finish.

Chaozhou woodcarving is well known for its openwork (網狀細工) carving technique, which sets patterns against a hollowed-out backdrop, Lau says.

Other woodcarving techniques used in the Chaozhou craft include relief carving, in-the-round carving and intaglio (凹雕) carving. In relief carving, the pattern projects from the wood surface against a flat backdrop. Carving in the round produces three-dimensional pieces that can be viewed from all angles. With intaglio carving, the design is cut into the wood surface.

Before they start carving, craftsmen have to choose the right knives and the right wood. Camphor, China fir, chinaberry and rosewood are all common carving materials.

The process of carving is a complex one and every detail matters.

Woodcarvers first outline and image on a thin piece of paper, then placing it on a block of wood before carefully carving out the patterns and putting colours on them.

The patterns carved reflect the local culture of Chaozhou.

"One of the most common themes is sea animals such as crabs, lobsters and fish, which is a reflection of the everyday life of the Chaozhou people, many of whom used to be fishermen," Lau says.

"The carvings also indicate the hope for abundant catches."

Also popular are signs of blessings such as phoenixes, as well as scenes form folklore (民間傳說), myths and Chaozhou opera that carry a positive message, such as Guo Ziyi's (郭子儀) Birthday Celebration, a story about prosperity and longevity.

"Chaozhou people perform opera for the deities (神) they worship," Lau says.

"On some carved pieces of multilayered openwork, you will find the detailed depiction of these stories where different scenes are separated by the carving of footpaths, streams and steps.

For crossbeams, Wu considers a form called "three beams, five melons" the most magnificent (壯麗的) type of woodcarving.

This form is characterized by short columns in the shape of melons; they simultaneously decorate the beams and support the ceiling above them.

"Melons, which grow on long vines (攀緣), are a symbol of abundant offspring," Wu says.

"The blossoming [ˋblɔsəm] of fruit is also a sign of a big, prospering family."

As well as its application on buildings and beams, Chaozhou woodcarving is often used to decorate tools and objects used in religious rituals.

These include offering plates, shrine (聖殿) tables on which incense (香) is burned and where ancestor tablets are placed, and the boxes in which sacred (神聖的) food is placed inside a temple.

"You give the most precious food to deities, and the container also needs to be the highest quality, which is why we decorate it with gold," Wu says.

The Chaozhou people have a long tradition of deity worship.

They are devoted (真誠的) to building and refurbishing (整修) temples and ancestral halls, and it is this dedication that has kept the art of woodcarving alive and flourishing (興旺的).

"Everyone wants the deities to protect them and their family, and we all want our temples and ancestor houses to be the most spectacular (壯觀的)," Wu says.

It's a far cry from Hong Kong, where high labour costs are contributing the speedy decline of the art of woodcarving.

"Chaozhou woodcarving reflects our deep feelings for our deities and ancestors."

"The more detailed the woodwork, the more we show our respect," Wu says.

"The tradition is a source of pride of us and reminds us of where we come from."

Text neck and WhatsApp thumb

Young adults have grown up today with mobile phones as an evident part of their lives. Text neck syndrome and SMS thumb may occur due to repetitive use of hand held devices resulting in repetitive stress injury or an overuse syndrome while using their mobile phones or other electronic devices for prolonged periods of time. Aim of the research is to assess self reported addiction to smartphone use and correlate its use and musculoskeletal disorders in neck and hand in young healthy adults.

The study showed that musculoskeletal problems in neck and hand (predominantly thumb) can be seen in smartphone addicted students which may be short term initially but may later lead to long term disability.

viewpoint of other people

If you say to yourself, "How would I feel, how would I react if I were in his shoes?" you will save yourself time and irritation (惱怒), for "by becoming interested in the cause, we are less likely to dislike the effect." And, in addition, you will sharply increase your skill in human relationship.

Success in dealing with people depends on  sympathetic grasp of other person's viewpoint.

Cooperativeness in conversation is achieved when you show that you consider the other person's ideas and feelings as important as your own. Starting your conversation by giving the other person the purpose or direction of your conversation, governing what you say by what you would want to hear if you were the listener, and accepting his or her viewpoint will encourage the listener to have an open mind to your ideas.

Seeing things through another person's eyes may ease tensions when personal problems become overwhelming

Too much folic acid during pregnancy

If it is true that too little folic acid results in nervous tissue damage, as is accepted by the scientific community in regard to neural tube defects (NTDs), then it seems plausible (似合理的) that too much folic acid may result in nervous tissue damage associated with autism.

let others ventilate

Most people trying to win others to their way of thinking do too much talking themselves. Let the other people talk themselves out. They know more about their business and problems than you do. So ask them questions. Let them tell you a few things.

If you disagree with them you may be tempted to interrupt. But don't. It is dangerous. They won't pay attention to you while they still have a lot of ideas of their own crying for expression. So listen patiently and with an open mind. Be sincere about it. Encourage them to express their ideas fully.

If you want enemies, excel (勝過) your friends; but if you want friends, let your friends excel you...When our friends excel us, they feel important; but when we excel them, them may feel inferior and envious (羨慕的).

In talking with people, don't begin by discussing the things on which you differ. Begin by emphasizing the things on which you agree.

Get the person saying "Yes, yes" at the outset (beginning). Keep your opponent, if possible, from saying "No."

Socrates (蘇格拉底) asked questions with which his opponent would have to agree. He kept on winning one admission (承認) after another until he had an armful (一抱之量) of "yeses". He kept on asking questions until finally, almost without realizing it, his opponents found themselves embracing (欣然接受) a conclusion they would have bitterly (極其) denied a few minutes previously.

The Chinese have a proverb pregnant with (意味深長的) the age-old wisdom of the Orient: "He who treads (行走) softly goes far."

Carnegie, D. (1981). How to Win Friends & Influence People (Revised Ed.) New York, NY: Pocket Books.

(kknews.cc)

HKU Nursing

Be friendly

If we (only) have the patience and the candor (真誠) and the desire to get together, we will get together.

A drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall...if you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend.

Gentleness and friendliness are always stronger than fury and force.

The sun can make you take off your coat more quickly than the wind; and kindliness, the friendly approach and appreciation can make people change their minds more readily than all the bluster (咄咄逼人的話) and storming in the world.

Carnegie, D. (1981). How to Win Friends & Influence People (Revised Ed.) New York, NY: Pocket Books.

'Hard' stays the same whether it is an adjective or adverb...'Hardly' means 'only just' or 'almost not'.

https://englishlive.ef.com

In traditional British grammar, the rule is that will should only be used with second and third person pronouns (you; he, she, it, they). With first person pronouns (I and we), the 'correct' verb to talk about the future is shall. ... Equally, not all varieties of British English use 'shall' in these senses.

Line Busy Error,
他說︰「What is the situation?」

From Fukuoka to Tokyo

The day has come for me to leave this room I've been used to living in
I'm still bewildered (困惑的) at this new journey

Inside the bus that's heading toward the station
I emailed my friend

I tried to call on (拜訪) the morning platform
But somehow, I felt that it was different

I came carrying an old guitar
I've placed out all of the pictures

I let something go and take something
I wonder if it's that kind of repetition?

This show of courage continues even in my dreams
If I became cowardly (膽小的), I would be cut off there

Inside the train that began to go
Just a little bit, I was moved to tears

This town that continues outside the window
I wished that it wouldn't change

The person who gave me the old guitar
Had said that Tokyo is scary

I've already stopped searching for an answer
It's fine being full of mistakes

The red evening glow was cut off at the building
Even if I endure the tears

Each journey that comes with the next morning
Has its doubtful places, right?

I can't simply choose the right thing
At least I understand that

Core of the Earth

The core is thought to be around 80% iron, though the exact figure is up for debate.

The main evidence for this is the huge amount of iron in the universe around us. It is one of the ten most common elements in our galaxy, and is frequently found in meteorites (隕石).

The constant movement of molten iron creates an electrical current inside the planet, and that in turn generates a magnetic field that reaches far out into space.

The magnetic field helps to shield us from harmful solar radiation. If the core of the Earth wasn't the way it is, there would be no magnetic field, and we would have all sorts of problems to contend with (對付).

Admit our mistakes

Say about yourself all the derogatory (貶低的) things you know the other person is thinking or wants to say or intends to say --- and say them before that person has a chance to say them...a generous, forgiving attitude will be taken and your mistakes will be minimized.

There is a certain degree of satisfaction in having the courage to admit one's errors. It not only clears the air of guilt and defensiveness, but often helps solve the problem created by the error.

Any fool can try to defend his or her mistakes --- and most fools do --- but it raises one above the herd (人群) and gives one a feeling of nobility (高尚) and exultation (得意) to admit one's mistakes.

Elbert Hubbard, "Come to think it over, I don't entirely agree with it myself. Not everything I wrote yesterday appeals to (訴諸) me today. I am glad to learn what you think on the subject. The next time you are in the neighborhood you must visit us and we'll get this subject threshed (翻滾) out for all time. So here is a handclasp (握手) over the miles..."

microbiota and immune system

The combination of the host and its microbes is known as the 'holobiont' (mutualism). It is this co-dependence, this evolutionary inevitability, that led...to propose another level on which natural selection can act.

Tolerating some non-self substances and attacking some self molecules is just as important as destroying non-self pathogens.

People infected with hepatitis A or measles didn't have allergies as often as the uninfected...Strachan himself found that babies who had suffered an infection in the first month of their lives were no more likely to develop allergies than those who hadn't.

Professor Agnes Wold's reframing (再構造) of Strachan's original hygiene hypothesis has gained ground among scientists. Research on the body's microbiota have added our understanding of what triggers the immune system to develop in a healthy way. It is not simply infectious diseases that a super-clean environment puts a stop to, but normal colonization by the microbes that are sometimes referred to as 'Old Friends'. These old friends have evolved with us every step of the way, deeply engaged in conversation with the immune system as they have gone along.

Professor Sarkis mazmanian discovered a 'password', produced by a bacterium called Bacteroides fragilis. This species is one of the most numerous members of the microbiota, which often takes up residence in the gut immediately after birth. It produces a chemical called polysaccharide A (PSA), which is released from the surface of B. fragilis in tiny capsules. The capsules are engulfed by immune cells in the large intestine, and the PSA inside triggers the activation of regulatory T cell. The regulatory T cell then send out calming chemical messages to other immune cells, preventing them from attacking B. fragilis.

Antibiotics rarely decrease the total number of protective microbes present; instead, they shift the composition of the different species. It seems the real change is in how the immune system behaves, according to which members of the microbiota are present.

The drop in virulence (of Ebola), and mortality rate, means victims live just that little bit longer, giving the virus a better chance of switching to a new host and perpetuating (延續) its spread.

Don't say, "You are wrong."

Never begin by announcing, "I am going to prove so-and-so to you." That's bad. That's tantamount (無異於的) to saying, "I'm smarter than you are. I'm going to tell you a thing or two and make you change your mind."

You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him to find it within himself.

Be wiser than other people if you can; but do not tell them so.

You will never get into trouble by admitting that you may be wrong. That will stop all argument and inspire your opponent to be just as fair and open and broad-minded as you are. It will make him want to admit that he, too, may be wrong.

Few people are logical. Most of us are prejudiced and biased. Most of us are blighted (破壞) with preconceived (預先形成的) notions (觀念), with jealousy, suspicion, fear, envy and pride.

"I am convinced now that nothing good is accomplished and a lot of damage can be done if you tell a person straight out that he or she is wrong. You only succeed in stripping (剝去) that person of self-dignity and making yourself an unwelcome part of any discussion."

Agree with thine (your) adversary (對手) quickly.

Avoid argument

Why prove to a man he is wrong? Is that going to make him like you? Why not let him save his face (in a public speech)? He didn't ask for your opinion. He didn't want it. Why argue with him? Always avoid the acute angle.

Nine times out of ten, an argument ends with each of the contestants (競爭者) more firmly convinced than ever that he is absolutely right.

If you argue and rankle (使人怨恨) and contradict, you may achieve a victory sometimes; but it will be an empty victory because you will never get your opponent's good will (善意).

Buddha said,"Hatred (仇恨) is never ended by hatred but by love."

Our first natural reaction in a disagreeable situation is to be defensive. Be careful. Keep calm and watch out for your first reaction. It may be you at your worst, not your best.

When you have heard your opponents out, dwell (deal with) first on the points and areas on which you agree.

Anyone who takes the time to disagree with you is interested in the same things you are. Think of them as people who really want to help you, and you may turn your opponents into friends.

Could my opponents be right? Partly right? Is there truth or merit in their position or argument? Is my reaction one that will relieve the problem, or will it just relieve any frustration? Will my reaction drive my opponents further away or draw them closer to me?

sincere appreciation

Little phrases such as "I'm sorry to trouble you,""Would you mind?""Thank you"---little courtesies like these oil the cogs (齒輪) of the monotonous grind (研磨) of everyday life---and, incidentally, they are the hallmark of good breeding (教養).

The unvarnished (無掩飾的) truth is that almost all the people you meet feel themselves superior to you in some way, and a sure way to their hearts is to let them realize in some subtle (微妙的) way that you recognize their importance, and recognize it sincerely.

Talk to people about themselves and they will listen for hours.

Material that absorbs carbon dioxide

CO2 capture and storage (CCS) has the potential to develop into an important tool to address climate change. Given society’s present reliance on fossil fuels, widespread adoption of CCS appears indispensable (不可或缺的) for meeting stringent (嚴格的) climate targets. We argue that for conventional CCS to become a successful climate mitigation (緩和) technology—which by necessity has to operate on a large scale—it may need to be complemented (補充) with air capture, removing CO2 directly from the atmosphere. Air capture of CO2 could act as insurance against CO2 leaking from storage and furthermore may provide an option for dealing with emissions from mobile dispersed (被驅散的) sources such as automobiles and airplanes.

Air capture research is still in its infancy and the practicality of large-scale deployment (部署) needs to be further explored. The inability to produce accurate cost estimates for a nascent (初期的) technology, however, should not be considered a reason for withholding support. Indeed, air capture is clearly feasible, and there are several lines of argument that suggest that its cost could well come down to a level that would make air capture economically interesting. Air capture would provide a different approach to reducing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. There is abundant research and development (R&D) to be undertaken with regard to the various possible materials, components, and workings of air capture technology. Given the enormity of the global climate challenge, we think this R&D needs to be scaled up urgently.

Introduction to WWI

Passage

Online Game,

Be a good listener

Few human beings are proof against the implied (含蓄的) flattery of rapt (專心致志的) attention.

There is no mystery about successful business intercourse (交流)...Exclusive (專有的) attention to the person who is speaking to you is very important. Nothing else is so flattering as that.

Many people fail to make a favorable impression because they don't listen attentively. They have been so much concerned with what they are going to say next that they do not keep their ears open. Very important people have told me that they prefer good listeners to good talkers, but the ability to listen seems rarer than almost any other good trait (特點).

If you aspire (渴望) to be a good conversationalist, be an attentive listener. To be interesting, be interested. Ask questions that other persons will enjoy answering. Encourage them to talk about themselves and their accomplishments (成就).

Remember that the people you are talking to are a hundred times more interested in themselves and their wants and problems than they are in you and your problems.

Scientists think that a large object, perhaps the size of Mars, impacted our young planet, knocking out (挖出了) a chunk of (大塊) material that eventually became our Moon. This collision set Earth spinning at a faster rate. Scientists estimate that a day in the life of early Earth was only about 6 hours long.

The Moon formed much closer to Earth than it is today. As Earth rotates, the Moon's gravity causes the oceans to seem to rise and fall. There is a little bit of friction between the tides and the turning Earth, causing the rotation to slow down just a little. As Earth slows, it lets the Moon creep (緩慢行進) away.

The Moon is drifting (漂流) farther from Earth. We can use extremely accurate atomic clocks to measure exactly how much the rotation is slowing down. One hundred years from now, a day will be about 2 milliseconds longer than today.

Three emails sent to Prof Chan in 2010

August, 2010
Dear Sophia,

My name is Samson Lau, a year 2 student studying in BNURS. I got fail in both formative and summative sections of nursing practicum IIB. I just observed some problems happened in my summative practicum. I admitted I did quite poor in the practicum and it is necessary for me to defer in coming academic year. The purpose of this email is to express what I saw and what I heard in those three weeks.

A clinical instructor asked me to observe classmate B’s skill on wound dressing, but his ability in aseptic technique was weakened under the observation by two students including me. I observed that his transfer technique was not proper. Then, the clinical instructor said classmate B always had error under observation. Is it an excuse?

I have not passed the aseptic technique in my last practicum of year two. The clinical instructor asked me to handle a relatively complicated wound. The patient has MRSA infection. I had to wear PPE and middle-size disposable gloves (but my hands are too large to wear) throughout the procedure. As you know, I have to use alcohol hand rub before donning the disposable gloves. Usually, I pressed the alcohol hand rub bottle for two to three times. It took me a relatively long period to dry. The clinical instructor always counted the time I used to irrigate and clean the wound. Therefore, I would wear the gloves before my hands were dry. Because the disposable gloves were not worn properly, contamination occurred due to the unfitted disposable gloves. Then, two clinical instructors (one is second assessor) taught me to press alcohol hand rub only once before wearing the disposable gloves. I think that it is not a proper way to disinfect the hands. All I want to point out is that it is really under pressure when two clinical instructors watching my errors in the whole procedure.

Classmate I’s aseptic technique is very poor. For instance, she put the forceps in the middle of the sterile field at the beginning of wound dressing. Even a year one student knows it is not a proper way to position the equipment. Luckily, she passed the final practicum (after practicing with clinical instructor later?).

In male Foley insertion, two classmates put on the sterile gloves incorrectly. They might be too excited as we do not have many chances to do this procedure. Besides, classmate M held the penis with sterile gauze and then touched other sterile materials using the same hand. I discussed with her mistake after the procedure but she said it's no problem as she thought that she just held the penis with sterile gauze. Also, a balloon should be tested before cleaning penis by Hibitane. That student did not do this step and the clinical instructor did it for him/her.

For AOM, many classmates admitted that they did not complete 3 check 5 right in preparing IVI. Classmate F said she prepared IVI faster than me because I completed the 3 check 5 right procedure.

I forgot to sign after administering medications for two times in the last practicum of year two. However, some of my classmates also had this careless problem but I am the only one to fail AOM.

I also want to write something about professional behavior. Classmate A spoke the full Chinese name of patient in the minibus. Is it a serious incident? Besides, some students watched TV in the ward because they worked so “efficient” in the orthopedic ward and ward staff complaint of their conduct.

Clinical instructor said I could not display good team spirit and cooperate well with colleagues. I was in charge of two to three patients in a particular cubicle. That cubicle had six patients and three students. I cooperated with them well. However, the clinical instructor required me to enter another cubicle and work with others. I just did not want to watch TV with them in another cubicle.

Actually, I have had bipolar disorder (mood disorder) since Form 2 and my left hand has the problem of tremor. I have told my clinical instructor the situation. I told my clinical instructor not to give me any privilege. At the end, she seems to require me to do better than other classmates. I do not want to blame anyone but I observed the problem of double standard. It is unfair to me.

Second Email sent to Prof Sophia Chan

Dear Sophia,

Firstly, I would like to write about my past experience in participating supervised lab practice. The clinical instructors just wrote "fake" physician's order right before I performed my poor clinical skills. Those lab practice only focused on nursing intervention/implementation. Pre-assessment, patient's general condition, charts (e.g. BP, I&O) and kardex information are not included in lab practice. Therefore, we cannot get the whole picture of the patient. There was only one task for one patient, but it is not the real case we faced in the hospital. Usually, multiple tasks had to be managed at the same time. Then, we had to prioritize those interventions and had to implement them in a step-by-step manner and in a systematic way. And it is the actual requirement of clinical instructors in the clinical setting.

Later, I heard that supervised lab sessions will upgrade to scenario-based supervised lab sessions in the coming academic year. I was glad to know the new strategy at the beginning. However, a clinical instructor told me that year 3 students would have lots of "score-related" clinical assessments. The ratio of clinical instructor to student will probably change from 1:2 to 1:12 (my approximation) just before clinical assessments. All I want to say is my learning will be disturbed heavily under this reform.

Reform without careful consideration will not success. I am sorry that I do not have enough intelligence to give any suggestion. September is coming, I guess everything will turn into a mess if no action taken. We are in the same ship, I do care about the future of HKU school of nursing. Feel free to correct me if I wrote anything wrongly.

Best regards,
Samson Lau

Date: 11 April 2011
Subject: Problems that cannot be solved by myself only

Dear teachers,

I am a year two student studying year three non-clinical subjects because of fail of Practicum IIB. One clinical instructor said, "You are the most hardworking student in the group, but you really cannot load." That means I am not smart enough.

I have to take lithium sulphate to treat my bipolar disorder. The side effect of this medication is tremor. Dr. Tsoi, a psychiatrist, said lithium sulphate could not be stopped. He prescribed an anti-parkinsonian drug called Benzhexol HCl to reduce the tremor. However, my left hand shakes slightly even not under stress. Tremor does not affect my confidence, but patients may feel scared.

Dr. Cheung, a psychologist at CEDARS, said my illness was probably a physiological problem as my disorder started from Form two. My medications could not be stopped and I have to take these medications for my rest of the life.

Another clinical instructor asked me to be a nurse after handling my illness. Unfortunately, my sickness won't go away before my death.

Besides, I felt disappointed regarding the lab booking system. The reason is that it gives me too many constraints. We could not decide what to practise in the supervised lab. As I observed, not all the clinical instructors used the scenario-based teaching approach. Although I have no experience in OSCA examination, it only trains the working speed of students in my point of view. I have seen a year two classmates practising clinical skill for the OSCA exam. She ran to the white board to do documentation after finishing off-staple. In my opinion, students learn in an OSCA-based way. If the skills are not included in the OSCA exam, they would not practise. It was heard from a year two student. Last year, I could invite clinical instructors to supervise my lab. Now, I don't know if they have time to help me as the workload of clinical instructors is increasing. Two CIs told me their tiredness in their career.

As we all know, HA hospitals do not employ year two student to be TUNS. Therefore, I don't have any chance to improve my skill, knowledge and confidence.

I cannot foresee any hope if support is not given by teachers. I entered HKU by non-JUPAS admission. I failed Chinese Language and Culture in A-level. I studied associate degree for only one year. I even don't have an associate degree. If I fail in the coming practicum, I have to work in the society with the Form 7 qualification because I don't want to be a financial burden for my family. Study has to be postponed. I studied very hard to enter university and I don't want to quit university due to fail of practicum.

Regards,
Samson Lau
BNURS Year II

醫生說不知道 placement 的requirement and demand, 不寫 suitable for practicum,只是寫了 suitable for study.

Remember names of people you meet

Jim Farley discovered early in life that the average person is more interested in his or her own name than in all the other names on earth put together.

Remember that name and call it easily, and you have paid a subtle (微妙的) and very effective compliment (致意). But forget it or misspell it -- and you have placed yourself at a sharp disadvantage.

Sometimes it is difficult to remember a name, particular if it is hard to pronounce. Rather than even try to learn it, many people ignore it or call the person by an easy nickname.

Most people don't remember names, for the simple reason that they don't take the time and energy necessary to concentrate and repeat and fix names indelibly (不能磨滅地) in their minds. They make excuses for themselves; they are too busy.

Franklin D. Roosevelt knew that one of the simplest, most obvious and most important ways of gaining good will was by remembering names and making people feel important -- yet how many of us do it?

We should be aware of the magic contained in a name and realize that this single item is wholly and completely owned by the person with whom we are dealing...and nobody else. The name sets the individual apart; it makes him or her unique among all others.

A psychologist said, "People who smile tend to manage, teach and sell more effectively, and to raise happier children. There's far more information in a smile than a frown (皺眉). That's why encouragement is a much more effective teaching device than punishment."

Become genuinely interested in other people

You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.

People are not interested in you. They are not interested in me. They are interested in themselves.

When you see a group photograph that you are in, whose picture do you look for first?

If we merely try to impress people and get people interested in us, we will never have many true, sincere friends. Friends, real friends, are not made that way.

If the author doesn't like people, people won't like his or her stories.

If we want to make friends, let's put ourselves out to do things for other people--things that require time, energy, unselfishness and thoughtfulness

Many companies train their telephone operators to greet all callers in a tone of voice that radiates interest and enthusiasm. The caller feels the company is concerned about them.

Publilius Syrus remarked,"We are interested in others when they are interested in us."

Martin Ginsberg said,"It was Thanksgiving Day and I was ten years old. I was in a welfare ward of a city hospital and was scheduled to undergo  major orthopedic (整形外科的/骨科) surgery the next day...My father was dead; my mother and I lived alone in a small apartment and we were on welfare. My mother was unable to visit me that day...A young student nurse heard my sobbing (啜泣) and came over to me. She took the covers off my face and started wiping my tears. She told me how lonely she was, having to work that day and not being able to be with her family. She asked me whether I would have dinner with her...She talked to me and tried to calm my fears..."

Chapter 3

Remember that tomorrow when you are trying to get somebody to do something. If, for example, you don't want your children to smoke, don't preach (說教) at them, and don't talk about what you want; but show them that cigarettes may keep them from making the basketball team or winning the hundred-yard dash (奔跑).

"If there is any one secret of success," said Henry Ford, "it lies in the ability to get the other person's point of view and see things from that person's angle as well as from your own."

Many salespeople spend a lifetime in selling without seeing things from the customer's angle.

Looking at the other person's point of view and arousing in him an eager want for something is not to be construed (理解為) as manipulating that person so that he will do something that is only for your benefit and his detriment (損害).

A child was underweight and refused to eat properly. His parents used the usual method. They scolded and nagged (嘮叨)...His father said to himself, "What does that boy want? How can I tie up what I want to what he wants?"...His boy had a tricycle that he loved to ride up and down the sidewalk (人行道). A few doors down the street lived a bully--a bigger boy who would pull the little boy off his tricycle and ride it himself...Naturally, the little boy would run screaming to his mother, and she would have to come out and take the bully off the tricycle and put her little boy on again. This happened every day...What did the little boy want?...His pride, his anger, his desire for a feeling of important...And when his father explained that the boy would be able to wallop (擊潰) the daylights out of the bigger kid someday if he would only eat the things his mother wanted him to eat.

Chapter 2

The only way I can get you to do anything is by giving you what you want.

John Dewey said that the deepest urge in human nature is "the desire to be important."

It is this desire that lures (引誘) many boys and girls into joining gangs and engaging in criminal activities.

When a study was made a few years ago on runaway wives, what do you think was discovered to be the main reason wives run away? It was "lack of appreciation." And I'd bet that a similar study made of runaway husbands would come out the same way. We often take our spouses so much for granted that we never let them know we appreciated them.

Of course flattery (阿諛奉承) seldom works with discerning (眼光敏銳的) people. It is shallow, selfish and insincere. It ought to fail and and it usually does. True, some people are so hungry, so thirsty, for appreciation that they will swallow anything, just as starving man will eat grass and fishworms.

In the long run, flattery will do you more harm than good. Flattery is counterfeit (偽造的), and like counterfeit money, it will eventually get you into trouble if you pass it to someone else.

The difference between appreciation and flattery is simple. One is sincere and the other insincere. One comes from the heart out; the other from the teeth out. One is unselfish; the other selfish. One is universally admired (讚賞); the other universally condemned.

General Obregon's philosophy: "Don't be afraid of enemies who attack you. Be afraid of the friends who flatter you."

Flattery is telling the other person precisely (恰好) what he thinks about himself.

One of the most neglected virtues (美德) of our daily existence is appreciation. Somehow, we neglect to praise our son or daughter when he or she brings home a good report card, and we fail to encourage our children when they first succeed in baking a cake or building a birdhouse. Nothing pleases (使高興) children more than this kind of parental interest and approval.

carotid intima-media thickness

Atherosclerotic vascular disease (動脈粥樣硬化血管疾病) begins in childhood and progresses over decades. Symptomatic, clinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) events generally occur when atherosclerosis progresses to flow-limiting disease that causes ischemia (an inadequate blood supply to an organ or part of the body), or when a thrombus (血栓) forms on an existing plaque as a result of rupture or erosion...As a screening test, imaging must be safe, be sensitive, be affordable, and lead to interventions that can favorably alter the natural history of CVD. Measurement of carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) with ultrasound is a noninvasive, sensitive, and reproducible technique for identifying and quantifying atherosclerotic burden and CVD risk. It is a well-validated research tool that has been translated increasingly into clinical practice…In 2000, the American Heart Association Prevention Conference V concluded that CIMT “can now be considered for further clarification of coronary heart disease (CHD) risk assessment at the request of a physician,” provided that it is performed by an experienced laboratory. In 2001, the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III stated that CIMT “could be used as an adjunct (attachment) in CHD risk assessment…

blame her here

Pearson Sales.

Large-scale algae agriculture can reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The growth speed of algae is fast enough to lower this greenhouse gas of the Earth. It should be planted in an extreme large nets in order to harvest. It is probably unreasonable to be eaten by human as it would be a huge amount to consume. It is better to transform the algae into organic fertilizer. We should undergo polyculture of different species of algae as it can lower the risk of pest growth. Another problem has to be solved is that we have to consider how to handle the large amount production of oxygen. Carbon dioxide is only one kind of greenhouse gas, we can also eat less steak to prevent the production of methane.(Image: phys.org)

Autism and antibiotics

Autism is a severe developmental disability believed to have multiple reasons. This paper outlines the possibility of a chronic tetanus infection of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) as the underlying cause for symptoms of autism observed in some individuals.

A significant percentage of individuals with autism have a history of extensive antibiotic use. Oral antibiotics significantly disrupt protective intestinal microbiota, creating a favorable environment for colonization by opportunistic pathogens. Clostridium tetani is a general anaerobic bacillus that produces a potent neurotoxin... The vagus nerve is capable of transporting tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT) and provides a route of ascent from the intestinal tract to the central nervous system (CNS)…Once in the brain, TeNT disrupts the release of neurotransmitters...This inhibition of neurotransmitter release would explain a wide variety of behavioral deficits apparent in autism...Some children with autism have also shown a significant reduction in stereotyped behaviors when treated with antimicrobials effective against intestinal clostridia…

Bolte, E. R. (1998). Autism and Clostridium tetani[Abstract]. Medical Hypotheses, 51(2),133-144. doi.org/10.1016/S0306-9877(98)90107-4

Autism was once exceedingly rare...By the time the first real surveys were done in the 1960s, around 1 in 2500 children were affected...At the time of last count, in 2010, the number stood at 1 in every 68 children...

Mental health and antibiotics

In fact, gastrointestinal symptoms are surprisingly common in people with mental health and neurological conditions...

Diarrhea is often a side effect of antibiotics...

Clostridium difficile infections cause severe intractable (難治療的) diarrhea in some people after they have been given antibiotic treatment...

For sufferers of long-term conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, emotion plays a fearsome role in their symptoms...

Sudo and Chida designed a simple experiment, using mice, that looked at whether the gut microbiota affected the brain's response to stress... in the germ-free (in the gut) mice the (stress) hormone concentrations were twice as high...

...Many microbes were (soon) linked to mental illness, but it is the Toxoplasma parasite that has proved to be the most compelling suspect for many conditions...

...Introducing live bacteria (to the gut) increases levels of tryptophan in the blood. This little molecule is of paramount (首要的) importance of happiness, as it is converted directly into serotonin...the increase in tryptophan that the added bacteria bring about is not because they make it, but rather because they prevent the immune system from destroying the body's supplies of it...
