Despite the fact that people of the East River Column were treated as members of the Allied forces after VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day) and the British government and the People's Republic of China had established diplomatic relations in 1950, the Hong Kong government's policy was to discriminate against those who had any Communist connection or sympathy. Sometimes this took the form of suppressing institutions, for example closing Dade College in the late 1940s.
