Doppler effect and expansion of universe

Astronomers observed that light from distant objects in the universe is red-shifted, which tells us that the objects are all receding away from us. Power on the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Some devices will "power on" automatically when you open the case.

Attach AED pads to the victim's bare chest.
Choose adult pads for victims 8 years of age and older.
Peel the backing away from the AED pads.
Attach one AED pad on the victim's upper-right chest (directly below the collarbone).
Place another pad to the side of the left nipple, with the top edge of the pad a few inches below the armpit.
Attach the AED connecting cables to the AED box (some are pre-connected).

"Clear" the victim and analyse the ryhthm.
If the AED prompts you, clear the victim during analysis. Be sure no one is touching the victim.
Some AEDs will tell you to push a button to allow the AED to begin analyzing.

If the AED advises a shock, it will tell you to clear the victim.

If no shock is needed, and after any shock delivery, immediately resume CPR, starting with chest compressions.

For victims younger than 8 years old of age,
use child pads if available.
If you do not have child pads, you may use adult pads. Place the pads so that they do not touch each other.
If the AED has a key or switch that will deliver a child shock dose, turn the key or switch.

政治不正確?

七月初，板主入了一批 HKU Press 的英文書。
書本昨天送到，其中一本是 "Voices from Tibet".
中文譯名為「聽說西藏：散文及實地報導文選」。
我承認因為時間趕急，見賣得出，中大書店亦有賣，
便不假思索進書，當時的政治形勢也沒今天嚴峻。

同事說︰「被上層load到你入了此書，看你怎解釋。」
他又叫我在系統上查一下對上一次為何進貨。
我發現是港大出版社促銷的其中一本，中大亦然。
表明上一次入書不是主動落單。
入書都要自我政治審查，可能是公司的特色。

示威為何要警方批准

1997年4月，回歸籌備委員會的法律小組宣布了兩項新的移交香港特區法令。一項要求示威須獲得警方批准；另一項要求本地團體，如果與外國組織聯繫須獲得許可。 這些措施被廣泛視為北京試圖限制香港的自由。

In April 1997, the legal subgroup of the Preparatory Committee announced two new post-handover HKSAR ordinances, one requiring demonstrations to have police approval, another requiring local groups to obtain permission for associating with foreign organizations. These measures were widely seen as Beijing's attempts to limit Hong Kong's freedoms.

In 1992, the U.S. Congress enacted (頒布) the United States-Hong Kong Policy Act, which stipulates (規定) that the United States would continue to treat Hong Kong as a separate territory after 1997 as long as the president considers Hong Kong "sufficiently autonomous".

Jimmy Lai

In August 1994, the Chinese government closed down the Beijing branch of Giordano, a chain of clothing stores owned by colorful Hong Kong entrepreneur Jimmy Lai. Also the founder of Next Magazine, Hong Kong's best-selling weekly, Lai had routinely criticized the PRC leadership, even calling Premier Li Peng "a turtle's egg with a zero IQ" and "a national shame".

Timing of establishing DAB

Beijing came up with an anti-imperialist discourse not seen since the days of the Cultural Revolution, including colorful names for Patten, such as "sinner of the millennium" and "liar" for introducing democracy only after 150 years of colonialism and for violating the Joint Declaration and the Basic Law. It also supported the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB), a local grassroots political group that had been established soon after Patten arrived in Hong Kong in 1992.

九十四年前的省港大罷工給現時的香港有什麼的啟示？撇除當年中國因素，香港有很多社會問題接近一百年都未解決。第一，工時長。縱使您是人生勝利組，三十出頭已經結婚生子，許多人都不能夠親自教育子女，要靠四大長老或傭工。第二，居住問題。新加坡地小但成功，港人望塵莫及，我們的政府只懂提出東大嶼，討好商家、傾斜功能組別，明明有大批棕地，不好好研究交通配套。第三，投票權與政治參與。港人想普選，中央打破承諾不允許。議員選了出來，宣誓表現不「莊重」或認為你有「港獨」思想，又會被取消資格。

Although it was sparked by events in China, the strike derived part of its local force from genuine economic concerns and from the popular feeling against privileged status of foreigners. This was apparent from the demands of the strike commission (委員會), which apart from standard issues --- such as an eight-hour workday, the abolition (廢除) of contract and child labor, freedom of speech and press, the right to organize, and reductions in rent --- also had a strong local component: that labor unions be allowed to vote for a Chinese member on the Legislative Council and that Chinese be treated as the equal of Europeans and be able to live on the Peak.
