In August 1994, the Chinese government closed down the Beijing branch of Giordano, a chain of clothing stores owned by colorful Hong Kong entrepreneur Jimmy Lai. Also the founder of Next Magazine, Hong Kong's best-selling weekly, Lai had routinely criticized the PRC leadership, even calling Premier Li Peng "a turtle's egg with a zero IQ" and "a national shame".
