Explanation of the time course of an epidemic can be partly achieved by estimating the effective reproduction number, R(t), defined as the actual average number of secondary cases per primary case at calendar time t (for t >0). R(t) shows time-dependent variation due to the decline in susceptible individuals (intrinsic factors) and the implementation of control measures (extrinsic factors). If R(t)<1, it suggests that the epidemic is in decline and may be regarded as being under control at time t (vice versa, if R(t)>1).

Effective reproduction number at time (Rt) is the average number of secondary cases per one case at any given time. This number will vary as the outbreak progresses, and indicates real-time transmissibility. Effective control measures and behavioral changes, such as quarantine enforcement, usage of face masks, travel restrictions, class suspensions, and social distancing, are all factors that may affect the Rt of a virus.
If Rt = 1, each infected patient will go on to infect one other person. Statistically, this would mean that one new infected patient will replace another who had recovered or passed away from the disease. This also suggests that the outbreak is stabilizing, with no changes in number of infected people over time.

對抗原快測、核酸檢測、政府措施的分析
HK01: 「2 月 25 日，政府方面就宣布『計劃容許』快速測試呈陽性人士，透過網上系統直接登記陽性結果，而無須經過核酸檢測確認，便可被直接視為陽性個案作後續跟進，以加快支援陽性個案人士。然而相關安排及系統正在準備階段，詳情容後公布。」
明報︰「有醫生指出，Omicron潛伏期中位數約3天，早期病毒量較低或未有病徵時，測試結果未必準確。建議宜在有暴露風險後第2至3日，或有病徵的第1天做相關測試。」
本人分析︰「核酸檢測在微病毒量的情況下都可以正確地得出結果，所以《明報》所說的『未必準確』是指抗原快速測試。兩篇報導沒有存在衝突，病毒量高的話，抗原快速測試呈陽性，準確性高，所以不用經過核酸檢測確認；另一方面，病毒量低的時候，抗原快速測試不一定準確。所以《明報》的報導也是對的。」

留家抗疫記
話說本身我們要在星期一、二或三去做免費核酸驗測，然後在一星期內做兩次抗原快速測試。
21/2(一)做了免費核酸驗測，直至今天還沒有結果。
22/2(二)有同事又咳又有痰，他稱21號晚有微燒，但22號早上的抗原快速測試呈陰性。我這個同事是一個文盲，未必知道快速測試怎樣做。我沒有權力叫他返家休息，只可以吩咐他立刻報告給休假中的店長。我問他店長有沒有回覆他，他表示店長只覆了「Okay」，沒有叫他立即返家。當日店舖有四個正職當值，顧客不多，人手充裕。我和該同事在收銀處共處一段時間，期間兩人都有帶口罩，但有短距離對話過。該同事問我︰「明天用不用上班？」我回覆道︰「要看自己有沒有發燒。」
23/2(三)早上按指示做了抗原快速測試，呈陰性。到達公司，知道該同事請了病假。放工前一小時，我收到店長電話，他說該同事抗原快速測試呈陽性。公司立刻要求我們分批在辦公室內做抗原快速測試，當時三個同事都呈陰性。上頭叫我們停業三天。晚上，我返家後留在自己房，戴著口罩。我上網看自費核酸驗測預約情況，經已爆滿。
24/2(四)我早上到兆麟做多一次免費核酸驗測。
六時左右有輕微徵狀，口探攝氏37度，踩界，有少少頭痛，之後食了兩劑必理痛。護士朋友叫我盡量少出房，戴口罩，保持空氣流通，他亦建議我明早再做抗原快速測試。

當晚公司有新安排，密切接觸者要核酸驗測陰性才能上班，每天上班前要做抗原快速測試。
25/2(五)我們早上按公司指示做抗原快速測試，大家均呈陰性。最初店長叫我們 26 號 10:30am 前再做抗原快速測試，如果大家都是陰性，要 26 號提前一天開舖。事隔 13 分鐘，店長表示今天都要開店，不過因為人手不足告吹。我和區長溝通，他知道我昨日不適，吩咐我安心等核酸驗測報告，但店長就叫我視乎病情，再決定明天是否上班。
26/2(六)本人例休，都會自己再做抗原快速測試，繼續等核酸驗測報告。

食物鏈之巔
中學時期，生物科老師說沒有一個物種像人類這般，人口不斷上漲。每一種動物都有天敵，或處於一種被捕食者(prey)和捕食者(predator)的關係。捕食者無論怎樣強，當被捕食者數量下降，捕食者的數量會隨之下降，如下圖︰
病毒似乎是人類的天敵，更是食物鏈之巔。病毒的變種速度無「人」能及，無論人類科技有多進步，疫苗的研發速度也未必比病毒快。歸根究底是人口密度的問題，人口越多越稠密，社交距離越短，病毒越是橫行無忌。
地理課有一個相似的概念。單一種植(Monoculture Farming)會引致蟲害，漫山遍野都是同一農作物，生物多樣性(Biodiversity)減少，天敵便有機可乘。人類好比穀物，病毒好比蟲害，於是我們捲入疫症大流行的旋渦。
