折射鏡 (refractors)、反射鏡 (reflectors) 及折反射鏡 (catadioptrics)

主焦點的設計使用在天文台的大望遠鏡上，觀測者置身於鏡筒內反射光線匯聚的焦點上。在過去都是由天文學家自己置身其中，如今都由CCD取代了。
