Chesters and colleagues concluded that rinsing methods may have a direct effect on caries increment and to gain optimum benefit from toothpaste, rinsing with an excessive volume of water should be avoided. Ashley and colleagues similarly concluded that the preferred practice was to rinse with a small volume of water after brushing.
