Cook meals thoroughly and avoid eating sushi
Covid-19 virus was found on the packaging of imported frozen seafood in Yantai, a port city in Eastern China recently. Professor Jin Dong-yan, a molecular virologist at HKU, warned the public of eating high-risk food such as sushi despite no Covid-19 cases caused by food or its packaging in Hong Kong and mainland China yet.
He urged the public to stay alert and cook food thoroughly.
Jin added that the activity of the virus would be low after long distance shipping, “Shrimp and fish cannot support the growth of the virus. The virus cannot grow, replicate or multiply in those foods or packages, it will just stay there and die out,” Jin said in an interview with the South China Morning Post.
Jin said the virus was detected due to high sensitivity of the nucleic acid detection method.
